Lately, freedom has become a sacred phrase we constantly hear, no matter how vague its meaning... The terms freedom and liberty mean a state in which a person is free from... and a person is free to... do or perform something... The first is negative freedom, where the goal is freedom from all forms of regulation and restrictions in the form of commands, prohibitions, or teachings deemed contrary to the intentions of the person who is free; while the second ('freedom to') is called positive freedom, where a person is allowed to determine for themselves what they will do... This is according to Isaiah Berlin in Two Concepts of Liberty (1958).

For a Muslim, freedom has three meanings... First, freedom is identical to 'fitrah' (innate human values)—that is, the original nature and nature of humans before being changed, before being contaminated, and before being corrupted by the surrounding system of life... As the Prophet said:

'kullu mawludin yuladu 'ala l-fitrah'.

Every person is born as a pure creature and servant of Allah, free from the stain of disbelief, polytheism, and so on. However, those around them corrupt this innate human reason, leading them to become disbelieving and arrogant toward Allah. (HR.Bukhari - Moslem)

Therefore, a truly free person is one who lives in harmony with their reason, because the soul of every human being bears witness that Allah is their Lord. Conversely, a person who violates their innate nature as a servant of Allah is truly not free, because they live in the prison of their desires and the shackles of Satan. They are corrupted by the values of their environment.

The fourth-century Hijri exegete, ar-Raghib al-Ishfahani, in his book explains two meanings of "freedom" (hurr): first, freedom from the bonds of law; Second, freedom from bad traits such as greed for wealth, thus becoming enslaved by it. This second meaning is what the Prophet (peace be upon him) alluded to in an authentic hadith:

"Woe to the slave of money" (ta'isa 'abdu d-dinar') (See: Mufradat Alfazh al-Qur'an, p. 224).

The second meaning of freedom is the power of ability (istitha'ah) and will (masyi'ah) or desires (iradah) that Allah has given us....... to choose our own path in life.... Is it the straight path (as-shirath al-mustaqim) or the curved path..... Is it the steep road that climbs.... or the smooth path that descends.... Is it the path of the prophets and pious people,.... or the path of the devil and the people astray.... 'Whoever wants to believe,... is free, he is welcome.... Whoever wants to disbelieve, is free, he is welcome.....'

(fa-man sya'a fal-yu'min, wa man sya'a fal-yakfur), the word of Allah in the Qur'an (18:29).

Freedom here symbolizes one's own will, will and desires.... Human freedom means that they must return home to their creator.... whether they want to be happy in this world or in the afterlife...

Allah says: "Whoever desires the present (worldly) life.... Then We will hasten for him in that world what We desire for those whom We desire... and We prescribe for him the hell of hell; he will enter it in a state of disgrace and banishment.... And whoever desires the life of the afterlife and strives towards it earnestly while he is a believer,.... Then they are the ones whose efforts will be well rewarded." (QS al Isra': 18-19)

"Whoever wants profit in the afterlife, we will increase that profit for him... and whoever wants profit in the world... we will give him a portion of the world's profits.... and there will be no happiness for him in the afterlife." (QS ash Shura: 20).

That's how freedom in the world is judged with clear reason... It's up to the individual... whether to submit or disobey Allah..... Whether to serve the Creator or serve the creatures..... Of course, this freedom has heavy consequences and very heavy responsibilities throughout time...

Allah Ta'Alah says that there is no compulsion in religion.

Every human being is guaranteed the freedom to surrender or disobey Allah, to be Muslim or to disbelieve, to choose the path of light with sound reason, or darkness with reason, following the desires of the common human race. Those who voluntarily embrace Islam (thaw'an) are superior to those who are forced to embrace Islam (karhan).

Then, it's very funny how they manage to throw themselves into the dark path, choosing the path of light and thus understanding good things, understanding bad things, those who voluntarily disbelieve are truly pitiful, their minds closed and unthinking, their migration is still difficult.

Third, freedom in Islam means 'choosing the good' (ikhtiyar)... As explained by Professor Naquib al-Attas, according to its root, ikhtiar requires the right choice and good consequences. (See: Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam, pp. 33-4)... Therefore, those who choose evil, evil, and disbelief have actually abused their freedom.. Because, The choice is not a good one (khayr)... Here we can understand why, in a civilized world, humans are not allowed to freely kill other humans.

So,... on a practical level,... true freedom reflects knowledge and manners,... while false freedom reflects ignorance and barbarism.... Freedom should be guided by knowledge and manners so as not to damage the order of life.... So as to bring happiness in this world and the hereafter...

It is within this framework that a Muslim understands Allah's words:

"Whoever does a righteous deed, it is for his own sake, and whoever does an evil deed, it is for his own sake; and your Lord is never unjust to His servants" (Surah Fussilat: 46).
